Dry Riser Systems

Dry Riser Design

Since the publication of BS 9990:2015, dry riser systems have been formally recognised as the appropriate non-automatic firefighting solution for buildings where upper floors are beyond the effective reach of fire service hoses. Dry risers provide the fire and rescue service with a reliable means of delivering water quickly to multiple storeys, significantly improving firefighting efficiency and reducing set-up time during an emergency.

Although many dry riser installations appear similar, not all systems fully comply with BS 9990:2015. To meet the requirements of the standard, a dry riser system must incorporate fire-service-approved inlet breeching valves, correctly sized steel pipework designed specifically for firefighting use, landing valves installed at each required floor level, and suitable air release and drain arrangements. In addition, systems must be subject to six-monthly visual inspections and annual hydraulic pressure testing carried out by competent persons, with full records maintained. When specifying or maintaining a dry riser system, it is essential to ensure that all components, installation practices and testing regimes fully align with BS 9990.
